A first birthday is such a special milestone, and a birthday photoshoot is a lovely way to capture your little one's personality, expressions and all those wonderful little details.

A birthday photoshoot does not have to include a cake smash. If your little one isn't ready for cake, you simply don't like the idea of a messy cake smash, or you'd prefer a more traditional birthday portrait session, that's absolutely fine. We can create beautiful birthday photographs using balloons, decorations, favourite toys, special outfits and other personalised details instead.

Cake Smash Sessions

If you would like to include a cake smash, we can create a fun and colourful part of the session where your little one can explore, play with and enjoy their birthday cake while I capture those natural expressions and messy little moments.

Please note: the cake is not included in the photoshoot price. Parents are responsible for providing the cake for the session.

What type of cake should I bring?

You are welcome to choose a cake that matches your preferred colours or birthday theme. A simple cake often works beautifully, but you can make it as personalised as you like. If you are planning a cake smash, a cake that is suitable for your baby to handle is recommended. Soft sponge cakes with simple icing tend to work well.

Please avoid cakes containing hard decorations, small pieces that could become a choking hazard, or anything that your child has a known allergy or intolerance to.

If you're unsure what type or size of cake to bring, please ask before your session and we can discuss what will work best for the photographs.

What themes are available?

If you book the Bronze or Silver package, you can choose from one of my standard backdrops and props. However, if you book a Gold package, you can choose and design a setup which is linked to your child's interests.

What should my baby wear?

For a cake smash, many parents choose a cute birthday outfit, romper or nappy cover. You may also wish to bring a second outfit for photographs before or after the cake smash.

What should I bring?

For your birthday or cake smash session, you may wish to bring:

Your birthday cake, if you have chosen a cake smash

A change of clothes

Wipes and a towel

Your child's favourite toy or comforter

Any special birthday decorations or props

A special outfit or birthday outfit

A drink and snacks for afterwards

Cake smashes can be messy, so bringing spare clothes for both your little one and yourself is always a good idea!

What if my child doesn't want to eat the cake?

That's completely fine. Some babies and toddlers love getting stuck into their cake, while others are more interested in touching it, playing with it or simply looking at it! We can set up photo opportunities which look as though they have enjoyed the cake! There is no pressure for your child to eat the cake. The session is about capturing their personality and enjoying the experience.

Do we have to have a cake smash?

Absolutely not! A birthday photoshoot can be completely cake-free. We can concentrate on beautiful portraits of your little one, using balloons, birthday decorations, toys, outfits or other meaningful items. This can be a great option if you prefer a cleaner, more classic style of photography or if your child isn't ready for a cake smash.
