Newborn Photography – Everything You Need to Know

Welcoming your little one into the world is such a special time, and a newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture those tiny details and precious first days that pass so quickly.

When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?

Newborn sessions are ideally photographed during the first 5–14 days after birth, when babies are generally sleepier and more settled. This can make it easier to capture those beautiful curled-up newborn poses.

Every baby is different, though, so please don't worry if your baby is older than two weeks. I am happy to discuss your baby's age and needs when you book.

When should I book my newborn photoshoot?

It is best to book your newborn photography session during pregnancy, the earlier the better! We then book 3 provisional dates to cater for altering due dates. Babies rarely arrive exactly when expected, so there is no need to worry if your due date changes.

What should my baby wear?

For many newborn photographs, babies look beautiful simply wrapped or in a nappy, allowing the focus to remain on their tiny features. However, I can provide a selection of beautiful wraps, blankets and newborn photography props for your session. If you have a special outfit, blanket or family item that you'd like included, please feel free to bring it along.

What should parents and siblings wear?

Simple, neutral clothing tends to work beautifully in newborn photographs. Soft colours such as cream, beige, white, grey and muted tones help keep the photographs timeless and ensure that your new baby remains the focus.

  • Please avoid large logos, busy patterns or very bright colours.

Can parents and siblings be included?

Absolutely, when you book a Silver or Gold package siblings and family members can be in the photos too, creating beautiful memories of those first days together.

What happens during the photoshoot?

Newborn photography is relaxed and baby-led, which is why we allow up to 3 hours for the session. There is plenty of time for feeding, cuddling, changing and settling your baby throughout the session.

There is no need for your baby to sleep for the entire photoshoot. We simply work at your baby's pace and allow plenty of time for breaks when needed.

Your baby's comfort and safety are always the priority.

What should I bring?

I recommend bringing everything you would normally need for your baby, including:

Plenty of nappies

Baby wipes

Formula or expressed milk if required

A dummy/pacifier if your baby uses one

A favourite blanket or special family item

Any special outfits or keepsakes you'd like photographed

It's always better to bring more than you think you'll need.

Feeding your baby before the session

A well-fed baby is often more settled and sleepy, so feeding your baby shortly before the session can be helpful. However, newborn sessions are completely flexible and you are welcome to feed your baby whenever they need it.

Please don't worry about keeping your baby on a strict schedule for the photoshoot.

How long does a newborn photoshoot take?

Newborn sessions can take several hours, depending on your baby's needs. This allows plenty of time for feeding, settling and changing without rushing.

The aim is to make the experience calm and enjoyable for both you and your baby.

What if my baby is unsettled?

Don't worry! Babies cry, feed, need changing and want cuddles — that's completely normal.

A newborn photoshoot is not a test for your baby. We take our time, follow their cues and give them whatever they need to feel comfortable.

Your newborn photography experience

My aim is to make your newborn photography session relaxed, personal and enjoyable. These first days with your baby are incredibly precious, and the photographs will give you something tangible to look back on for years to come.
